3G means 3rd Generation, an evolvement
from 1G (1st Generation) and 2G (2nd Generation). 1G was
in the era of analog cell phones while 2G was in the era
of digital cell phones. We are still in the era of digital
cell phones.
3G is an improvement from 2G because
it provides greater access to data and voice information,
higher data speeds (1xRTT or ED-VO) which enable viewing
of streaming and 3gp videos on cell phones.
The technology standards for
3G include:
- UMTS based on previous standard WCDMA.
Most GSM carriers and networks use this.
