Cell Phone Jammers

Cell phones are a great communication device which can help to make our lives easier and provide assistance in emergency situations. But, have you ever been in a restaurant and the cell phone at a neighboring table rings and the person decides to have a loud conversation. How about cell phone usage in movie theaters? Well human ingenuity has developed a new product - the cell phone jammer.

There are important reasons to use cell phone jammers. Originally developed for the police and military, cell phone jammers eliminated signals in certain restricted areas to combat terrorism concerns, security measures or areas where signals could interrupt sensitive equipment. Jammers were also designed to stop the use of cell phones to remotely trigger explosives. Some countries have laws which banned cell phone jammers including the United Kingdom due to Ofcom regulations. Also, all European Union countries ban cell phone jammers due to lack of CE approval.

Some legitimate examples of civilian use of cell phone jammers including deterring academic cheating and stopping corporate espionage.

Disrupting a cell phone is actually a relatively simple process. A cell works like any other radio type communication of communication device. The cell phone communicates with the cell tower and as your location changes; you are passed from tower to tower.

Disrupting a cell phone is the same as jamming any other type of radio communication. A cell phone works by communicating with its service network through a cell tower or base station. Cell towers divide a city into small areas, or cells. As a cell-phone user drives down the street, the signal is handed from tower to tower. The jammer does not allow access to the radio spectrum to the cell-phone users within range of the jamming device. This is referred to as a denial-of-service attack. The jamming device emits a more powerful signal on the frequency. The two signals collide and cancel each other out. Jammers used by law enforcement officers can disrupt service up to 1 mile from the device.

The first cell phone jammers were limited to working on phones using only analog or older digital mobile phone standards. Newer models jammers can block all widely used systems. Some of the newer phones shift to different frequencies and systems when interfered with but the jamming technology has been adapted to block the newer phones.

Simple cell phone jamming devices are an alternative to more expensive devices such as Faraday cages, which is a metallic enclosure that prevents the entry of an electromagnetic field.

The individual whose cell phone signal is jammed will experience a phone screen indicating no signal is available. Most people would not even notice or be able to tell that their phone is being jammed. They’ll assume they are in a dead spot, and get irritated.
